Hart formerly of Eagle Point who has resided in the valley for the past 20 years killed himself Tuesday afternoon at his home in this city, 210 Beatty street where he was living alone. His body was not found until several hours after death. A .38 revolver was used. It is believed that financial and domestic trouble led the man to take his own life. He recently sold a ranch near Eagle Point for several thousand dollars and is said to have made one or two unfortunate investments with it. He had also become estranged from his wife who was suing him for divorce. He was 65 years of age. Tuesday morning he was on the streets leaving for his home about 11 o’clock. He spoke to J. B. Reese, a friend, telling him not to worry if he did not show for lunch but to look for him if he did not come down town for supper. He complained of illness. When Hart did not show up in the evening, Reese and J. H. Fleener went to the house to see how Hart was getting along. They found him dead upon the floor with a revolver in his hand a fatal wound in his head. The man’s muscles were stiffened showing that life had been extinct some hours. Dr. Clancy was called and stated that death had been instantaneous with the firing of the shot. Hart left a note in which he asked the authorities to notify Elmer Smith of Yreka and Pete Stowall of Eagle Point. The note was unsigned and contained no other message of any kind. Medford (Oregon) Mail Tribune, Saturday, 20 July 1912, p. 2, c. 2 To the Editor: In regard to an article appearing the Medford Mail Tribune of July 17 declaring that Mrs. John Hart had applied for a divorce this was altogether a mistake. I have never applied for a divorce nor intended to. From the article one would suppose that I was in some way responsible for Mr. Hart’s despondency and death. I believe this does me a great injustice. It is my opinion that his suicide was caused by physical suffering–he had been a victim of head trouble for many years–and I think he was insane at the time. [signed] Mrs. Susan C. Hart. Jacksonville (Oregon) Post, 20 July 1912, p. 1, c. 3 Despondent over financial and domestic troubles, John Hart, a pioneer rancher at Eagle Point, committed suicide at his home at 210 Beatty street about noon Tuesday by shooting himself with a .33 revolver. A note written with a pencil lay on a table within three feet of where his prostrate body was found in a pool of blood with a bullet wound through his head. “Notify Elmer Smith at Yreka, also Pete Stowell at Eagle Point,” was the contents of the note, which was unsigned. Hart but recently sold his ranch near Eagle Point for $22,500. A part of this money he had invested in a patent washer, which caused worry. He was also troubled over a divorce action that was brought by his wife and was to appear in the next term of court. Hart was about 68 years old and well known in the county. A cousin lives at Yreka and a daughter by his first wife is in southern California. Medford (Oregon) Mail Tribune, Monday, 22 July 1912, p. 2, c. 2 The funeral services of John H. [sic] Hart were held from the K. of P. Saturday, the Rev. W. T. Goulder officiating.
