He was a native of Mississippi. He moved to Iowa while a young man where he spent a number of years. While there he was married to Miss Martha Gordon, who died in 1899. Four children were born to them, all of whom are living. Three sons, A. J. Freel of North Bend, Ore.; A. O. Freel of Portland, R. A. Freel of Portland and one daughter, Mrs. Viola Hamilton of Libby, Mont. He died at the age of 81 years. He crossed the plains in an immigrant train, spending three years in Willamette Valley, then removing to southern Oregon, where he spent the remainder of his days. He will be remembered by the pioneers of upper Rogue river as one of the early pioneers. Burial took place at the Central Point Cemetery, Wednesday, February 26, at 3 o'clock.
