A. R. Veterans will be saddened to learn of the passing of Benjamin Franklin Cummings at his home in Central Point, Ore. Mr. Cummings was born in Vermont, October 17, 1843, and at the time of his death his age was 85 years, one month and two days. At the age of 17 years, Mr. Cummings enlisted in company D, First Vermont cavalry, second brigade, third division, first cavalry army of the Potomac. He served in all the battles of the Shenandoah valley under General Sheridan and also all the battles in the army of the Potomac from the Wilderness to the Appomattox. The first battle that he fought in was on Kilpatrick’s raid, then the battle of the Wilderness, Beaver Dam, Yellow Tavern, Groundsquirrel Bridge, Hall’s and Chickahominy Swamp, Winchester, Shenandoah Valley Front-Regal, Columbia, Furnace, Fisher’s Hill, Waynesburg, Dinwiddy Courthouse, Five Forks, Sailors’ Creek, Burksville Station and then Appomattox, the surrender. After the close of the war, Mr. Cummings moved from Vermont to Minnesota, and on October 31, 1868, was married to Janet Bowden, and to this union were born five children, three of whom survive him: James of Central Point, two daughters, Mrs. Sarah M. Hurbert of Adrian, Minn., and Mrs. R. W. Ager of Portland, Ore. Besides his sone and daughters he is survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and one brother, Fred Cummings of Preston, Minnesota, and one sister, Kate Hahfill of Mason City, Iowa. In 1913 Mr. Cummings came to Oregon and settled in Central Point, making his home there until the time of his death. Funeral services will be held at the Perl Funeral home Wednesday, November 20, 1928, at 2 p. m. Rev. D. E. Millard will officiate. Burial in the Central Point cemetery. Members of the American Legion will act as pallbearers and have charge of the service at the grave. Additional Comments: Date of death from Oregon Death Index.
