P., Medford (Oregon) Mail, Friday, 21 Mar 1902: J. P. Cotton, of Ashland, who was shot by H. C. Messenger on the 11th inst., died on the evening of the 15th, as a result of his wounds. Messenger, who had been released on $1000 bonds pending the result of Cotton's injuries, was taken into custody on a warrant issued from Justice Plymale's court at Jacksonville. Cotton's remains were brought to Ashland from the mill, and Coroner Pickel empaneled a jury consisting of E. J. Farlow, W. B. Gray, J. E. Cox, J. T. Rogers, J. L. Pennington and W. J. Stanley. W. M. Oter and Chas. M. Lee were summoned as witnesses. The jury found that J. P. Cotton, a native of Missouri, 38 years of age, came to his death from a gunshot wound inflicted on the 11th day of March, 1902, dying March 15, 1902, and said weapon was in the hands of H. C. Messinger, of Ashland, Oregon, at J. P. Cotton's mill 2-1/2 miles west of Ashland, Jackson County, Oregon.
