Cameron Stepped From Behind Tree in Front of Target. Dr. Warren L. Cameron, formerly of Medford, Saturday afternoon shot and fatally wounded Ed Hughes, manager of the Hotel Eileen at Eileen, in the Blue Ledge mining district. Hughes died from his wounds early Sunday morning. It is reported that the shooting was accidental. News of the tragedy was brought to Medford last night by a miner named Dailey, who was sent for the purpose from Eileen. According to his story, which was somewhat muddled, Hughes and Cameron were shooting at a target with an automatic rifle. Each was to fire two shots at a mark. Hughes fired first and went to ascertain the result of his marksmanship. He stepped behind a tree while Dr. Cameron fired his first shot. After waiting some minutes, and not hearing a second shot, Hughes evidently thought something was the matter with the rifle and started forward to ascertain the reason for the delay in shooting. As Hughes came from behind the tree, Dr. Cameron fired. The bullet struck Hughes square in the breast. The wounded man was carried to Hotel Eileen, where he expired early the next morning. Confirmation of the narrative was brought to Jacksonville last night by a man named Morris. Coroner F. H. Kuck of Siskiyou county, California, was notified from Medford of the tragedy and at once left for Eileen via Medford. He arrived this morning in Medford and accompanied by Undertaker Butler of Medford and P. J. McMahon, of the Hotel Nash Co., owners of the Hotel Eileen, took the Blue Ledge stage for the scene of the tragedy. Mr. Hughes was well known in Medford. He was formerly cook at the Nash. He was about 45 years of age, of jovial disposition and popular among acquaintances. He leaves a widow. Dr. Cameron was born and raised in the Rogue river valley, where his parents still reside. - - - - - Medford (Oregon) Daily Tribune, Tuesday, 3 Sep 1907, p. 1: HUGHES DIED FROM HEART WEAKNESS Aileen Hotel Manager not Seriously Wounded by Bullet Was Testing Rifle. Dr. Warren L. Cameron, who Saturday at Eileen accidentally shot Ed Hughes, who died early Sunday morning, arrived here last night from the scene of the shooting. He states that he was selling Mr. Hughes the rifle, and both were trying it to test its accuracy. Hughes shot twice, went to see how close to the mark he had come, then stepped behind a tree while Dr. Cameron fired. Instead of waiting for the second shot as had been agreed upon Hughes came from behind the tree just in time to catch a bullet through his arm. The wound was not regarded as a serious one, and the arm was bandaged. Dr. Cameron attended the wounded man, and in order to relieve his pain and induce slumber gave him two injections of morphine. Only a slight amount, not enough to be dangerous, was administered, states Dr. Cameron. One of the men stayed up to watch Mr. Hughes. At 2 o'clock Sunday morning another man took his place. At daylight he told the doctor how quietly the wounded man had been sleeping. Examination showed that Mr. Hughes had been dead for some hours, evidently from heart failure. A crowd of miners witnessed the accidental shooting. Dr. Cameron is heart-broken over the tragedy. The coroner and undertaker are expected to return from Eileen this afternoon. - - - - - Medford (Oregon) Daily Tribune, Wednesday, 4 Sep 1907, p. 1: JURY REPORTS DEATH FROM GUN WOUND Edward Hughes Passed Away as Result of Accidental Shot. Body Embalmed. "We, the coroner's jury, find that Edward Hughes came to his death as the result of an accidental gunshot wound." This was the verdict of the jury empaneled at Eileen by Coroner F. H. Kuck of Sisson, Siskiyou county, California, to examine into the cause of death of Edward Hughes, manager of the Hotel Eileen, who died Sunday morning. Nine witnesses were examined and all testified as to the nature of the wound, which was not considered serious. The wounded man was attended by Dr. Warren L. Cameron, who Saturday accidentally fired the fatal shot, and the witnesses testified that Dr. Cameron twice injected a small quantity of morphine to relieve the sufferings of the wounded man. Coroner Kuch arrived from Eileen last night with the embalmed body of Mr. Hughes, which was sent to his old home in Yreka. The coroner thinks that the nervous shock resultant from the bullet wound caused death.
