James D. Heryford, one of the cattle kings of Lake county, has been sued in the U. S. District court by one "Birdie" or Bessie or Grace McCarthy (she went by all three front names), for the trifling sum of $70,000, as a balm for the laceration of her feelings, mental disquietude inflicted by said Heryford, by reason of his refusal to carry out a promise to marry the "Birdie" aforesaid. Miss McCarthy hails from Wayne county, Mich., is a school teacher, and it was while following her profession that she became enamored of Heryford, and entered into the agreement with him, the breaking of which on his part has so injured and damaged the plaintiff that $70,000 is absolutely the only thing that will relieve her. Heryford is a widower, past 45 years of age, and has three children by a former marriage.
