Seely, 549 Fairmont avenue, died in Community hospital this morning of injuries received when the car in which he was riding turned over during a "drag" race last night on Oak Grove road. State police said the youth received multiple skull and jaw fractures and other multiple injuries in the accident, which occurred on an "S" turn near the Jacksonville-Medford highway at about 7 p.m. Sunday. Seely was a passenger in a 1931 roadster driven by Robert Lee Carter, 19, of 370 Chestnut street, according to investigating officers. The second car, a 1932 coupe, was driven by Bruce Dewayne Bowlsby, 18, of 1414 SE Long street, Portland, a house guest at the Seely home, they stated. The two drivers and Dean Allen, 17, of 801 North Central avenue, a passenger in Bowlsby's car, escaped injury, police said. Police said the four youths left Seely's home at about 6:30 p.m. for Oak Grove road to engage in a "drag" race. After arriving at the road they stopped and started off even, side by side in the two cars, down the 18- foot [wide] road. Bowlsby was not familiar with the road, according to officers, and failed to give Carter's car ample leeway as the two automobiles reached the "S" curve at a speed estimated by the two drivers to have been between 60 and 80 miles an hour. The Carter car went into loose gravel at the side of the road, spun around and turned partially over on the side in which Seely was riding, police stated. He was taken to Community hospital by Perl ambulance service. Carter and Bowlsby were cited for reckless driving, according to police. The youth was born Jan. 29, 1935 in Medford and had lived here all his life. He attended Medford schools and was interested in high school athletics, serving as manager of the basketball team one year. He is survived by his parents and by a sister, Mrs. James Wadlow, Medford. Conger-Morris Funeral home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
