APPLEGATE IS LISTING MISSING IN GERMAN RAID Second Lt. Donald W. Applegate, 27-year-old AAF pilot of a Flying Fortress has been reported missing in action, according to a telegram from the war department received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Applegate, 326 North Holly street. The aviator has been missing since a gigantic raid of 2000 planes over Germany and Hungary on April 13, and the wire stated he was thought to have been shot down over Hungary. Lt. Applegate had been overseas since January, having gone first to North Africa. From there he was assigned to headquarters base of the Fifteenth army air force in Italy. In one of his last letters to his parents, the officer stated that his unit had been out on many missions, with little rest between raids. Lt. Applegate graduated from Medford high school in 1935, attended school in Idaho for a time and later worked in Montana. He joined the army in March of 1941 and received his flying cadet's appointment in October of 1942, subsequently graduating from the field at Stockton, Cal.
