All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ********************************************************************************* File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com September 17, 2007, 8:46 pm Oregonian April 5,1893 Death Of J.M.Shively One Of Astoria's Oldest Residents Passes Away After A Long Illness Astoria,O.,April4- After an illness extending over several years,JjM.Shively died this morning at the residence of Mrs.Daggett.His death was not unexpected,as his physical condition had been slowly growing weaker for some time past.Although he had lived longer than the ordinary span of man's life,Mr.Shively retained much of his physical and mental vigor until July 1,1885,or until he was 8 years of age.It wa son that day that he contracte the illness from which he never recovered.A severe cold,which developed into rheumatism,suddenly terminated his usefulness.The disease affected his knees,amking it impossible for him to move around withot suffering excruciating agony,and from that day until yesterday he kept his bed.J.M.Shively was born April 2,1804,and was 89 years of age at the time of his death.He crossed the plains in 1843,and settled on his claim,at the original townsite of Astoria,in 1844,but never develpoed the large tartc of land which he owned.In 1845 he went to Washington,D.C.,where he contrate dhis second marriage.The lady was a sister of Judge Milton Elliott,of this city.He returned to Astoria again in 1847 as mail carrier,having been employedin that capacity by the post office department during President Polk's administration.On his arrival,he settled down on his claim,and never identified himself prominently with public matters.The only postion he ever occupied was that of postmaster,under Polk,in 1849.His porperty,which he conveyed to his son,C.W.Shively,about two years ago,is estimated to be owth about $200,000.The funeralke place tomorrow .
