All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ********************************************************************************* File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com February 15, 2008, 7:35 am Morning Oregonian October 11,1904 Crushed Under Train Deckhand Lies Beisde Track Near Flavel, and is Fatally Injured Astoria,Or.,Oct 10-(Special)- Victor Lindstrom, a deckhand employed on the dredge Chinook, was struck and almost instantly killed last evening by a train, on the Astoria $ Columbia River Railroad near Fort Stevens. The train was backing from Fort Stevens to Warrenton, and when a short distance below Flavel, Frank Hudson the brakeman, who wa son the rear platform, saw a dark object on the edge of the track. He immediatly applied the emergency brake, but was unable to stop the train in timeto avoid a collision. An investigation showed that the object was the body of a man and that the skull has been fractured and the right hand and arm badly crushed. The man was still alive , and he was quickly taken to the hospital at Fort Stevens, but he died soon after reachnig there. Later, the manwas identified as Victor Lindstrom. the deceased was about 40 years of age , and leaves a widow and several children living in England. He also leaves a brother,John Lindstrom, who is employed on the jetty at the mouth of the Columbia River. Coroner Ruhl has taken charge of the body, and will hold an inquest tomorrow afternoon.
