Mr Smith was a veteran of the civil war,having served through that conflict as a member of the 11th Michigan regiment.he saw fighting at both gettysburg and Missionary Ridge,and participated in smaller engagements Mr Smith was born in Ohio 79 years ago.Later he removed to Michigan and Minnesota.In the latter state he was for a time dairy inspector and was likewise enegaged in institute work. Twenty years ago he came west to Spokane.He had a farm in that district for a time but his work with the Washington State college at Pullman compelled him to abandon farming. Mr Smith had been a member of the agricultural committee of the Portland Chamber of Commerce for a number of years.Each year he was in charge of the exhibit of the Chamber of Commerce at the Pacific International Livestock exposition. Last year he conducted a successful dairy special which was sent through the Idaho distrcit by the Oregon Short Line.That same line was planning on sending a poultry special through the same section this year with him in charge. He is survived by two sons and two daughters:Mrs fred N Kilne,Mrs J.W Duff,Ernest C Smith of Portland,and Lou S Smith ,formerly of Barlow,now dairy specialist for Wasco County.
