Four year Old Child Is Killed By Auto
Gloria Oathes Formerly of this City Run Down While crossing Portland Street
Gloria,the four year old daughter  of Mr and Mrs Arnold Oathes of 644 Cottage 
Place,Portland,and formerly residents of this city,was run down by an 
automobile Tuesday forenoon at the corner of 4th and Alder Street,Portland.She 
died before Medical aid could reach her.
According to statements made to the police by eyewitnesses,the girl dashed 
ahead of the mother,stopped whent he mother cautioned her,and stepped backward 
into the front fentder of the machine.She grasped the fender,clung to it for a 
second,lost her grip,and went down beneath the wheel.the driver frankly told 
the police he did not see the child and did not know that he had struck her 
until the cries of pedestrians warned him that something was wrong.
The driver was so effected by the occurence that no charge was preferred 
against him.The majority of the specatators who witnessed the mishap 
exonerated the driver from all blame,the child having stepped directly into 
the path of the car while the machine was not going over five miles per hour 
at the time.
Funeral services will be held at Portland today and will be attended by 
numerous friends and relatives of this city.the Herald joins in extending 
sincere condolences to the bereaved parents.
