All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com November 24, 2006, 1:37 pm Canby Herald and Clackamas County News July 10,1924 Jessie L Nelson Killed By Auto On Pac Highway Near Her Home Little 12 year old Barlow Girl On Way To Poat Office To Mail Letter,Struck By Car and Instantly Killed;Funeral Service to be Held From Canby Methodist Church Friday,July 11th,at 2 p.m. Caught on the bumper and hurled against the radiator of a Hudson Coach,jessie L Nelson,12 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence E.Nelson,of barlow,was killed Wednesday morning at about 11 o'clock,as she was on her way to the Barlow Post Office.A deep gash in the skin of her head,received when she fell back against the radiator,told that death had come immediately. The accident took place a short distance from the south end of the new bridge spanning the Molalla River about a half mile south of Canby.Miss Nona Hoyt,of Harrisburg was driving the car that did the fatal work,was returning from a trip to Portland.According to the story to the officers,she did not see the girl in head of her.Shortly after she crossed the bridge a bee got in the car,and releasing her hold on the steering wheel to fight the bee,she felt the car sway the the left hand side of the road,but was unable to gain control of the machine before she saw the girl but few feet in front of her.She immediately tried to put on her mergency brakes but had caught the girl on her bumper of the car and had dragged her a short distance before she could stop. Mrs nelson was in Canby shopping at the time the death of the little girl took place.She was summoned immediately ,but by the time she reached the scene of the accident ,she was prostrated with grief.Jessie was her only daughter.Miss Hoyt upon seeing what she had done was nearly crazed with grief.She was taken to the home of Dr Garrett,where she remained unitl the arrival of her father and several friends of Harrisburg.The childs body was taken to Oregon City where it was placed in the Holman and Son chapel.Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the CanbyMethodist Church.Rev W Boyd Moore will officiate and internment will be made in the Zion cemetary. Immediately following the accident,State Traffic Officer harry Griffith was summoned from Woodburn.he made the trip in 20 minutes time on a motorcycle.he examined the brakes of the Hudson car and reported them to be in excellent condition.he stated that had he been operating the car he could ahve stopped within 30 feet of where the girl was walking if he had been traveling 30 miles per hour.Miss Hoyt admitted having been trsveling a little over the speed limit. Jessie Nelson was well known in Canby and the community surrounding.She was a student in the Barlow school,where she was a favorite among the students and isntructors.She was very active in Sunday school and church work,having for some time been a member of the Methodist Church choir.She is survived by her parents,two brothers,Everett and George,and several other relatives in and around Canby. Miss Hoyt was 32 years old,and has been for several years emploed in the First National Bank at Harrisburg.her father and other relatives lived in that city also.She said she was on her vacation,and was hurrying to her home in order to join a party in a trip to the beach. Following the suggestion of Mr nelson,Miss Hoyt was released and allowed to return to her home with her father.It is said that she begged Coroner O.A.Pace to put her in jail,saying she deserved the punishment.She said many times that she would never drive another automobile. Miss Hoyts friends have said that she was always very tender hearted and especially loved chuildren.It is said that she had taken to the ditch two times to avoid running over dogs.the family will return Friday to attend the funeral After having a report of the accident and viewing the body,Coroner o.A.Pace announced that an inquest would be unnecessary,stating that it was an unavoidable accident.
