Aged Pioneer Dies
Edward Mathiot,aged 76,one of the earliest settlers of this section,died at 
his home near Butteville,Saturday June 22,after an illness of about a week.the 
funeral was held there on Monday at 2;00 pm.,the Reve.Mr Vincent ,of 
Woodburn,officiating.The internment took place at Butteville cemetary.
Mr Mathiot was born in France in 1836,and came to Oregon in 1852.He settled in 
Butteville on a donation land claim about the same date and resided there 
until his death.His farm was long noted for its beautiful vineyard and its 
scenic beauty.he was always prominent in the affairs of his community and was 
deeply interested in all matters conducive to the welfare of his section,and 
as long as his health permitted was active iin community  and political 
affairs,though he never held nor desired political office.
The deceased is survived by his wife,Julia,three daughter,Mrs Jennie 
Matthieu,Mrs.Ellen Quin,Mrs Eva Smith and two sons,Wm Mathiot and Peter Mathiot
