All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com October 29, 2006, 4:19 pm Canby Herald and Clackamas County News December 14,1922 Old Canby Pioneer Answers Last Call Wm Knight,Pioneer Resident Of This City Dies At His Home Here On Friday Funeral services for the late William KNight,pioneer resident of this city,who died at his home here last Friday morning,December 8,were held from the M.E Church Sunday at 11:30 am ,Rev W.Boyd Moore,officiating.Several songs were rendered by the choir,Internmentwas in Zion cemetary near this city,Holman and Pace had charge of the funeral arrangements William KNight was born in Pine Creek,Allegheny county,Pa.,April 17th,1839,and at the time of his death was 83 years,7 months and 21 days old.1He was the son of Joseph and Sarah Knight.When six years of age he was taken to Bethel,Mo.,and in 1863,when 24 years of age,crossed the plains with the Bethel colony,settling near Willapa,Wash.,where he resided for two years,moving from there to Butteville,in Marion county,Ore.,where he lived for three years.From there he and his brothers settle din Canby,becoming in a sense,the founder of the town,a part of it having taken up a preemption calim a 145 acres here.Mr KNight has reside din Canby ever since.In 1875 he was united in marriage to Martha Elizabeth Birtchet,who survives him.To this union five children were born,all of whom survive him,and are: Mrs Bertha E Lee,Miss Joesphine Knight,Mrs vest Clark,of Canby;Mrs Veva Bradtl,of Aurora;Arthur Knight,of Portland.He is also survived by a brother John Knight,of Portland;a sister,Mrs mary Burchman,of Cottage Grove;three grandchildren,Miss Nonaine Lee,Arthur Clark,of Canby and Miss Martha Frances Bradtl,of Aurora. When a boy Mr Knight became a member of the Methodist church and as an early settler he was superintendant of one of the first Sunday schools,then held in the old White schoolhouse,later known as the Riverside District.Mr Knight held many offices of trust,being sherriff of Clackamas county for tow terms,postmaster of the city,city recorder,depot agent,also for some time in the general merchandise business,served as school clerk for District 86,for 43 years,giving up that position last fall,due to failing health,and was jsutice of the peace for Canby up to the time of his death. On the death of Mr Knight,Canby loses one of its most prominent pioneer residents,a man of sterling character,who was prominent in alll community affairs,highly respected and beloved by both young and old.
