All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com May 11, 2007, 7:10 am Canby herald August 22,1929 Farmer Found Dead,Well Known Here Thomas Oliver Kelland,48, well known farmer of Clackamaas county committed suicide some time Thursdasy night by cutting his throat with a pocket knife.The body was discovered in a clump of bushes a short distance from his home at Central Point,about four miles south east from oregon y, by J.E.Wells of Canby,member of a threshing crew from the farm of George Kellard,Canby,brother of the dead man.Ill health was the cause of the act. Mr.Kelland,about tewo years ago met with an accident when his horses he had been using in ploughing became frightened and ran way.He waas dragged by the chain of the plow,which had become entangked around his ankle.The leg was broken and for months he was in Oregon City hospital.About six months ago he suffered from a nervous breakdown and was taken to the home of his brother,George,and his condition had so improved that he was able to return to his home a few days ago. Thursday night about 9 o'clock,according to Mrs. Kelland,he left his bed on the porch,where he had been sleeping and failing to return she notified his brother,George.A searching party was formed Friday morning by the threshing outfit at the Kelland home and the discovery was made following hours of searh.Mr.Kelland left no reason for ending his own life,but members of the family say he had intimated ending his life,on account of illness since his accident. He was a member of one of Oregon Citys well known pioneer families.His fater, Robert Kelland of San Diego, who recently visited here,resided at Oregon City fro many years before taking up his residence at Sellwood and California. Mr.Kelland was born in Oregon City,August 25,1881,and had spent his entire life in Clackamas county,for years engaging in farming in the Central Point section.
