All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com November 4, 2006, 2:47 pm Canby Herald and Clackamas County News August 9,1923 Ralph Groff Killed In Auto Accident Thos.berg,Driver of Car Arrested;Accident Happens near barlow Ralph Groff,barber,of new York City,was killed near barlow Tuesday evening in an automoblie accident in which he was thrown from a car driven by Thomas berg into a barbed wire fence,and his skull fractured.The fatal car,according to Coroner,O.A Pace,who made an investiagtion Wednesday,left the road and dropped into a concrete culvert.As the car hit the culvert,Groff was pitched into the fence.the car continued on for about fifty feet,traveling across the road and smashed into a telephone pole and was wrecked.the car was towed to a local garage where it is being held. The driver,berg,had in his car as passengers,mr and Mrs james Croft,believed to reside at 580 Salmon street,the victim of the accident and mrs E.Esping ,widow,residing at fifth and hall streets,Portland,but who left the accident scene at once for salem.the Croft couple also disappeared before the officers could make an investigatio. Berg,the driver,was arrested by deputy Sheriff,A.Rothenberg of this city,and is charge with transporting intoxicating liquor.Six quarts of beer were found in the car,and a bottle two thirds of moonshine was found near the scene of the accident.berg was released under $500 bail.he was at one time pressman on the Oregonina and also worked at Oregon City for a number of year sin taht capacity. According to bergs story,he had invited the Crofts to take a ride with him in the evening,they suggested he pick up the other couple,to which he assented..he claims that he did not learn their names and knew the victim only as Jack.he denies that he knew that there was booze in the car.he said his passengers brought packages into the car but he did not inquire what they contained. Bergs trial on the booze charge is set for August 17,and an inquest will be held today.
