All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com December 30, 2006, 10:56 am Canby herald January 19,1928 Oregon City Woman Killed Here Thursday Car Plunge Over Embankment Near Canby Auto Park;Walter Jennings Injured Mrs.Edna Estes of oregon City was killed instantly Thursday evening and Walter J.Jennings,also of Oregon City,was seriously injured when the car in which they were riding went over an embankment near the Molalla River Bridge.The woman's neck was broken and her face was terribly cut by broken glass from the windshield.Jennings escaped with a few broken ribs and severe bruises. Mrs.Estes was driving the car,according to a statement made by H.N.Coon of the Molalla Lumber Co.,who was but a short distance behind her car,when the right whels skidded off the pavement.In attempting to get back on the hard surface the machine turned to the left suddenlt and plunged in a ditch turning twice over.It is believed that the driver beacme excited when the car turned and in attemptnig to put her foot on the brake,stepped on the accelerator causing the car to plunge forward.It turned twice over,according to witnesse,landing on its wheels in the hop yard. Jennings was removed from the demolished car to Dr.Dedmans automoblie which conveyed him to the Oregon City hospital.When interviewed by a represantative of the Herlad,before leaving the scene of the accident,he refused to make a detailed statement of the affair.He gave his name and the name of the owman,but other than that,would give no inofrmation.It is learned,however,that they had been to Salem where they purchased license plates for the automobile,and were en route home.They were riding slowly at the time,it is said,and there seems to have been no excuse for the accidentother than lack of self control. Mrs.Estes was about fifty years old,and had been working as a nurse in a hospital in Oregon City.her husband,Wm.Estes,ws killed uddenly about eighteen months ago when a gasoline tank explodediin front of his store ini Oregon City.She had been a resident of Oregon City for many years.
