Many Years In Canby After Long Years Of Continual Washing Of The Willamette, the Old Hom ePlace Is Extinct Mrs.Mary U.Billings,formerly of Gribble Prairie,died at her home in The Dalles,Oregon,Thursday,Oct. 8th,1925,and was laid to rest in the G.A.R. cemetary at The Dalles. Nrs.Billings was born on the Abiqua River in what is now Marion County,on September 26,1847.Her parents,Walter and Catherine Fish,son after moved to what was known as the Huckleberry woods east of Canby,later moving to the Big Eddy at the bend of the Willamette River northeast of Canby.Here she resided until her marriage to Joseph B.Gribble,after which she made her home on the Gribble Prairie until October 1,1894. To the above union were born eleven children,five of whom are still living.They are William S. and Raymond N. of tThe Dalles,Oregon;Walter L. of Inglewood,California;Elmer W. o Canby,Oregon;and Martin J. of Portland,Oreogn. Mr.Gribble died on May 21,1885. On June 26,18888,Mrs.Gribble was wedded to Amos B.Billings,to this union were born two children of whom one is still living,Bruce O.Billings of Dee,Oregon.On October 1,1925,he retired from active upper Hood River Valley where Mr.Billings took up a homestead and developed a valuable farm.On October 1,1924,he retired from active life and purchased a home in The Dalles,where he now resides. In the passing of Mrs.Billings Oregron loses one who knew much o fthe early history of the state.Her parents settled iin the Willamette Valley in about the year 1843,and Mrs.Billings was among the very first of white children born here.
