Bates Resident of oregon Since 1901,Laid To rest In Zion Cemetary Wednesday In the midst of life,death comes stalking through.So,on Sunday last,late in the afternoon,our community was saddened by the death of one of our old time citizens. Charles Lincoln Bates was born in Springfield,vermont,May 26,1845,and passed away at Canby,oregon,November 4,1923;age 78 years,5 months and 8 days.He was married to Martha Isabelle Dickson at beatrice,nebraska,on November 3,1875.he is survived by his wife and four children;Geirge F.,Elroy W., and mrs Erle Bowlsby,all residing in Canby,and Charles T of Santa Maria,Cailfornia.Two sisters,Harriet E Bates and Isabella M Benson of Springfield,Vermont,and eight grandchildren He was a veteran of the civil war,being a member of Company M,Eleventh Vermont Volunteers.As a young man after his service in the Civil War,he learned the iron moulders trade,which he followed for a preiod of fourteen years.After his marriage he began farming in Nebraska,and continued farming until moving to Canby. He was a member of the Msonic,Eastern Star,I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Lodges,being a charter member and helping to institute these four orders in Canby.he had been a Mason for fifty years and and Odd Fellow for twenty two years. He lived in Springfield,vermont,during his boyhood,coming West after the close of the Civil War,finally locating in Nebraska,where he married and lived until coming to Oregon in 1901.he lived on a farm near Canby unitl 1907,when he moved into town and engaged in the Real Estate business,which he conducted until his death. His Masonic history is very interesting and inspiring.he joined the Masonic Lodge in Monmouth,Illinois,in 1873,moved his membership to Firth,Nebraska,in 1879,of which lodeg he was Worshipful Master.Later he helped to institute Plumline Lodge No 214,at Adams,Nebraska,of which lodge he was Worshipful Master for a number of years.In 1908 he helped institute Canby Lodge No.134,A.F.&A.M. in Canby,being the first Master of this Lodge. Canby Lodge No 156,I.O.O.F. had charge of the funeral and conducted the services,and the Rev. Henry Speiss,formerly pastor of the M.E. Church in Canby and a close friend of Mr bates,preached the funeral sermon at the fmaily residence in Canby Wednesday afternoon.he was burie din Zion cemetary,in their family lot,Mr Bates,however being the first of his family to pass to the Great Beyond. In addition to those surviving and their family connections,he leaves friends to the number of those that last knew him.
