The car, a light delivery caught fire immediateyl following the crash and the driver and three of the occupants were burned to death. Maude Anthony and a child were taken from the blazing car were so seriuosly burned that their recovery is extremely doubtful. Beisdes J.W.Evans,driver of the car, other occupants were: Mrs. Agnes Evans, wife and their two children,June 8 and Agnes 9, Hermand Anthony, Sr. and Maue Anthony, his daughter, all residents of New Era. High Speed Blamed For Crash According to a brakeman who was riding at the rear of the locomotive at the time of the crash the car was being driven at a high rate of speed. This together with poor visibilkity due to rain on the windshiled is believed to have caused the crash. The brakeman tried to attract the attention of the driver, but failed. It was also reported to a reprerentative of the Herald that Mr. Evan's had been trouubled with defective eyesight and it was possible that he did not notice the approaching engine in time o avoid the fatal accident. The body ofd Anthony was taken from the front seat of the car and it was so badlu burned that positive identification was uncertain for some time. Other occupants of the car were not fully identified until some time later in the afternoon when officers and reliatives of the cvictims learned the names from New Era. The car wa straveling south on the highway, and there was considerable traffic at the time, but no one could be found who had been an eye witness to the worst accident that has ever happened in this city other than railroad men employe don the engine. Mr. Oglesb, who lives a short distance across the tracks from where the accident occurred, heard the crash and looked up in time to see the flames shooting out from the automobile. He rushed to the scene and assisted the engine crew in trying to extinguish the flames and remove the charred bodies. They succeeded in removing Maude Anthony and the little girl alive, but not until they both had been seriuosly burned. The girl's condition ,when taken to the hospital an hour after the accident, was very serious and it has been reported that she died later in the afternoon. The Canby fire department was called by one of the train crew to extinguish the flames and Fire Chief Fred Larson made a fast run for the scene with the chemical engine. Mr. Larson succeede in extinguishing the blaze but it all happened so suddenly that little service could be rendered. All Well Known Here The car wreck carried the passengers to sudden death was owned by Mr. Evans of New Era who had recently been empl, oyed in Portland. The party were on their way to Canby to attend the funeral of Paul C.Sollie. Maude Anthony is a cousin of J.E.Wells of Canby and all of the occupants were well kinown here. Mr. Wells assisted the officers in checking the passengers of the ill fated car. Beyond all question it was the most serious accident that has ever occurred in Canby and the entire community is wrought up over the terrible affair.
